1. The Week Before: Deep Research

The single biggest differentiator between candidates who get the job and those who don't is preparation depth. Most candidates spend 30 minutes Googling the company. Top candidates spend hours understanding the organisation's strategy, challenges, and culture.

🌐
Visit their website
Read the About Us, annual reports, recent news, and their programmes or services.
📱
Check their social media
LinkedIn, Twitter/X, and Facebook pages reveal their culture, recent activities, and tone.
📰
Google news about them
Search "[Organisation Name] Uganda 2025" to find recent press coverage, scandals, or achievements.
👥
Find your interviewers on LinkedIn
Knowing who will interview you helps you tailor your answers and find common ground.

2. Mastering Common Interview Questions

These are the questions that come up in almost every professional interview in Uganda. Prepare thoughtful, specific answers for each one — and practise saying them out loud.

Q: Tell me about yourself.
How to answer: Structure your answer as: present role → past experience → why this role. Keep it under 2 minutes. Example: 'I currently work as a Finance Officer at [Org], where I manage a portfolio of... Before that, I spent 3 years at... I'm particularly excited about this role because...'
Q: Why do you want to work here?
How to answer: Research the organisation thoroughly before the interview. Reference specific programmes, values, or achievements. Show you've done your homework — mention a recent project they've run or an award they've received.
Q: What is your greatest weakness?
How to answer: Choose a real, professional weakness (not 'I work too hard'). Show self-awareness and demonstrate what you're actively doing to improve. E.g., 'I used to struggle with delegating tasks, but I've been working on this by assigning clear deliverables to my team members.'
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
How to answer: Show ambition aligned with the organisation's goals. Research internal career paths. E.g., 'I hope to have grown into a senior leadership role in project management, ideally within this organisation as it expands its reach in East Africa.'
Q: Why did you leave your last job?
How to answer: Always stay positive. Acceptable reasons: career growth, new challenges, relocation, or the role ending (contract). Never badmouth a previous employer — it raises red flags about your professionalism.

3. The Day Before: Logistics & Mindset

✅ Practical Logistics
  • Confirm the venue and time
  • Do a test run to the location if possible
  • Prepare your documents in a clean folder
  • Iron your professional attire the night before
  • Set two alarms — arrive 15 minutes early
  • Save the interviewer's phone number
🧠 Mindset Preparation
  • Practise answers aloud (not just in your head)
  • Do a mock interview with a friend
  • Write out 3 strong stories from your experience
  • Get 8 hours of sleep — not 4 hours of cramming
  • Eat a proper meal before the interview
  • Visualise a successful interview outcome

4. During the Interview: What to Do and Avoid

✅ DO
Maintain confident eye contact
Listen carefully before answering
Use the STAR method for competency questions
Ask thoughtful questions at the end
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours
Be honest about what you don't know
❌ DON'T
Check your phone during the interview
Interrupt the interviewer
Speak negatively about past employers
Give vague, generic answers
Lie about qualifications or experience
Ask about salary in the first round

5. Questions to Ask the Interviewer

Always prepare 3–5 questions to ask at the end. This signals genuine interest and helps you evaluate if the role is right for you.

  • "What does success look like for this role in the first 90 days?"
  • "What are the biggest challenges the team is currently facing?"
  • "How would you describe the organisation's culture?"
  • "What are the opportunities for professional development here?"
  • "What are the next steps in the recruitment process?"
